Employment After the Military: Dispelling Common Myths to Uncover the Truths
There is enough to think about when you are leaving the military – finding a civilian job should not be another stressor you should have to fret about. There are many programs and services out there that are meant to aid veterans and their families in finding employment, but there are also many myths that lend themselves to creating more doubt in this process. Facing these myths, and understanding the real truths behind them can make this part of your transition much easier. Here are a few myths to consider:
Myth #1: It is a complicated and tedious process to apply for employment.
Truth: Many military retirees mistakenly believe it is difficult to find a job in our fast-paced society. Many premier companies have expanded their search for worthy candidates to high-tech proportions. Some of the more tech-savvy Fortune 500 companies have partnered with JIBE, a mobile recruiting specialty company, that provides a platform to allow for an easier way to apply to multiple companies via the Internet, and upload your resume and other supporting materials right from your smartphone.
Myth #2: There are very few jobs out there for veterans.
Truth: The fact is that there are millions of unfilled positions out there, and many companies are seeking hardworking individuals to occupy those positions. In addition, some employers may find you as a more desirable candidate over those with no military experience due to the types of skills you have learned, and the types of experiences you have endured. In addition, using a company that is completely based around assisting veterans to find employment is always a great way to go as well!
Myth #3: Changing careers is arduous and risky.
Truth: Deciding on the ideal career change can bring anxiety to anyone, but refuse to place any limitations on yourself. Although many people would prefer the security of the same job for a lifetime, the fact is that most people will change careers multiple times throughout their life. Embarking on a fresh career path may be the most significant decision you make to maximize your chances for work. In addition to the traditional office job, you can also choose a beneficial work-at-home option if that suits your lifestyle and needs.
Myth #4: After so many years in the military, it’s impossible to find alternate employment.
Truth: Journeying beyond your comfort zone is key to securing employment in a competitive market. The same powerful dedication that you had for serving your country must be applied to obtain employment to help yourself. Assess the number of skills and talents you developed while in the military, and you may be surprised to find you possess a number of marketable skills that are in supreme demand. There are also recruiting firms available, such as Recruit Military, which can connect you with companies that are currently hiring and assist you with updating your resume. Be confident in your abilities, education, and valuable experience. Never fear the unknown; you must embrace the change wholeheartedly to succeed.
When you remove the myths and anxiety, all you will see are endless job opportunities for the taking. With persistence, a positive attitude, and an honest assessment of your skills, you will undoubtedly obtain happiness and security in a new position.

Back to Bree:
Being a military wife is difficult, yes. But it isn't impossible! There are lots of opportunities out there, check out NAFjobs.org and USAjobs.gov for some options.
Before Cayman and I were married, in the dating stages, I knew that I wanted to join the Air Force as well. I was almost finished with my bachelors and decided (was told by my family is was the only way to go...) to go the officer route. I applied and was *shockingly* accepted into a rated position! Crazy, right?! I'd be a rated officer, navigating billion dollar planes around!
Anyways, I thought to myself before we got married that I couldn't be a military wife. I couldn't sell Scentsy or work at the BX. I just couldn't do it. Now, for some, it is totally okay! More power to you! But I am too strong-willed and independent to do that. I need a thrill seeking job, something where my adrenaline is pumping 24/7 (well, maybe not 24/7 but often enough).
Overseas, it is hard. Harder than being back in the USA. Your only options are on base or self-hosted jobs, which are still not allowed I hear... You technically are not even allowed to baby sit! Since it's taking away jobs from the 'economy'.
PRETTY CRAZY, RIGHT!?
So there is my two cents on this post! Hope you venture over to Emma’s blog at http://smileasithappens.blogspot.com!
Enjoy!!
